The special investigation team (SIT) of Goa police probing an illegal mining scam was taken aback when a noted mine owner, Haresh Melwani, refused to appear before them and asked for an explanation before the court.

He was asked to be present before the SIT for questioning. However, he preferred to approach the court seeking clarification and anticipatory bail.

"I want them to explain to the judiciary as to why am I being summoned. The Supreme Court has said this report cannot be a basis for any investigation. The SIT have audited my books, gone through my records during the last five years and am still being summoned. Why should I appear before them?" he asked.

Melwani is not the only mine owner who has been summoned by the SIT. The team had begun recording statements of all mining companies from May 30 and plans to carry out it till June 8

Mining giants of Goa Sociedade De Fomento Industries Pvt Ltd appeared before the SIT on May 30. Officials of Damodar Mangalji Co Pvt Ltd were present on May 31. GN Agarwal Mining Pvt Ltd was summoned on June 1, whereas, June 2 was the date allotted to Melwani's HL Nathurmal company.

"The SIT has probed all mining companies from all angles for the past five years. Now they are summoning us again without informing us about the documents to be carried and what part of our operations they want to probe. I have cooperated with the investigation in the past and I would continue to do so in the future. But this is not the way," said Melwani.

The directors of RNSB Group, Timble Pvt Ltd, Chowgule and Co Ltd & M/s Talaulikar & Sons Pvt Ltd have also been summoned during the next few days.
