Goa Elections 2017 | Casinos in state will be monitored by I-T during polls, says CEC

The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday said that the state administration will keep an eye on casinos in the state, which could be used to gift voters to influence ahead of the upcoming Goa assembly elections. 

Addressing the media, Chief Election Commissioner Naseem Zaidi said, "Political parties fear misuse of casinos where voters could be gifted to influence them, therefore, the state administration has been directed to keep an eye on them."

"Senior officials of Karnataka and Goa have been roped in to tackle concerns over casino misuse and the teams are working on a strategy," Zaidi added.

Stating that the entry and exit of casinos and transactions will be monitored, he said, "Static monitoring teams by Income Tax officials will also be keeping an eye and action will be taken as per the Income Tax (IT) laws.

The Election Commission has also asked the excise department to seek strict action against bars operating beyond stipulated deadline of 11:00 pm.

Zaidi also said that the state administration will also keep watch on the sale bulk items. "Purchase of items like pressure cookers, bicycles etc., are under watch. A list of 200 establishments have been made and the state administration is watching their sales." he added.

A total 250 candidates are in fray for the upcoming Goa Assembly elections, following the scrutiny and withdrawal of nominations. Of the 250 candidates to contest the February 4 polls for the state's 40 constituencies, 131 are from South Goa and 119 from North Goa, as per the data available with Chief Electoral Officer.
