A sub-inspector was killed in clashes between police and supporters of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leader Bimal Gurung on Friday.

According to sources, the incident took place early Friday when a police team raided a GJM hideout at Lepchas Bustee of Takvar in Darjeeling. Gurung was also present at the meeting.

The sources added that Gurung, while fleeing, fired at the policemen. "We had specific information about Gurung and his followers being present there. When our men were raiding the place, they fled the place and while escaping started firing at us. One of our men, Amitabha Malik was martyred and two cops have been injured. We presume some of their men have also been injured because we found blood trails at the spot,” said Darjeeling SP Akhilesh Chaturvedi.

Chaturvedi added that arms and ammunition have been recovered from the hideout. “We have recovered nine AK-47 rifles, 1,800 rounds of ammunition, one 9 mm pistol, 20 gelatine sticks, 1,000 detonators, a musket rifle, a pair of binoculars, a radio set and some batteries among other things. Those who managed to escape had taken a lot of arms and ammo with them. One person has been arrested who said that Gurung had camped there for the past two months and was gathering men and arms for a movement,” Chaturvedi said.

ADG (law and order) Anuj Sharma alleged that Gurung has connections with terror groups. “Bimal Gurung for his own personal interest plus with some other people has prepared is trying to spread unrest. He has lost all public support and is cornered now. He is directly responsible for all terror activities in Darjeeling. Gurung has links with Maoists and Northeast insurgent groups,” Sharma said at a press conference on Friday.

Malik, the slain SI, hailed from Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas and had been married about six months ago. His family demanded strong action against Gurung and his men who were responsible for Malik’s death. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had called up his father and expressed solidarity.  “Along with minister Jyotipriya Mullick I will visit his residence tomorrow. His wife will get a job with the police while his father, if he wants to, will get a job with the education department,” state education minister Partha Chatterjee said.

Tourism minister and party district president for Darjeeling Gautam Deb said, “Those who have been accused of anti-national activities will be strongly dealt with.”
