Looks like girl power is set to increase at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA). Figures of the call letters sent to female candidates suggest that they amount to 19.5% of the total. Last year’s figure was 17%.

According to the data shared by an official at the admission office at the premier B-school, around 235 girls have been invited for the second round of admission process - the written test and personal interview. A total of 1,176 call letters have been issued to fill 385 seats in the postgraduate programme in management.

Prof AK Laha, in charge of the admission process at IIMA, said there is an increase of around 2-2.5% in the figure of female candidates receiving call letters compared to last year.
“It seems girls are doing well in CAT. They have met the criterion to be called for the second round of the admission process and so we have issued call letters to around 19.5% of girls this time. There is no conscious effort to do so,” he said.

So, will this translate into more girls making it to the mecca of management? “I think, every year the percentage of female candidates called for the second round and that making it to the PGP batch is about the same. Last year, around 17% of total call letters were sent to girls and a similar percentage of girls got admission in  IIMA,” said Prof Laha.

Interestingly, this year too engineers have dominated the list as of the 1,176 candidates called for the second round, around 95% are from an engineering background. Of the shortlisted candidates, many candidates have some work experience and 50% have more than one year work experience.

IIMA will conduct the second round of admission at six centres in India - Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad.
