A Jammu-based 20-year-old Muslim girl, who converted to Sikhism to get married to a friend in April despite protests from her parents, has had her woes multiplied when her father lodged an FIR against the couple and J&K police ended up pursuing the duo.

Apprehending arrest, the couple approached the supreme court, which on Wednesday stopped the police from arresting them.

A vacation bench also issued a notice to the police and asked for a response and directed DSP of Jammu Police to ensure the couple is well protected.
Counsel Mandeep Reen assisted by Chetan Gupta told the bench that the girl and the Sikh boy, are both not minors, and got married on April 2 at Amritsar in Punjab.

The girl had changed her religion as well as her name after marriage which her family strongly disapproved of. They even threatened the couple with dire consequences.

The girl's father even lodged an FIR with Channi Himmat police on the charge of kidnapping under the Ranbir Penal Code, following which the police set out in search of the couple.

The lawyer brought to the court's notice that the boy's family members also were also threatened by the girl's parents in order to locate the duo.

"Despite being presented with affidavits on oath and the order of a sessions judge, Amritsar on April 4, who had recorded the personal statements of the petitioners (couple), and multiple other pieces of evidence from them, which show that they decided to lawfully get married of their own free will and that there was no question of kidnapping, the police and state authorities continued to insist on persecuting them and the boy's family," the lawyer said.
