A would-be-groom fumbling at a simple maths query cost his marriage as the girl refused to marry him and the wedding had to be called off.

Lovely (21), who is a class XII-pass, asked Rambaran (23) "how much is 15 added to six", ahead of the final ceremony on March 10, at Karerampur village in Rasulabad area of Kanpur Dehat, police said today.

"After much thinking, the would-be-groom replied 17," said Rasoolabad SHO Sunil Kumar.

Lovely's marriage with Rambaran was fixed some three months back, Kumar said, adding after the revelation that he was uneducated, Lovely denied to marry the boy.

"Boy's father had said Rambaran is educated when we had gone to see him some months back," said the girl's father, Mohar Singh.

Boy's family were adamant and did not agree to go back without bride which led to scuffle between the two sides, police said. After the intervention of the police, the matter was sorted out and the marriage called off.

The gifts that were exchanged between the two sides were returned, the police said.
