Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad was on Tuesday not allowed to enter Jammu and Kashmir as authorities continue a tough vigil in the state following the abrogation of Article 370.

Azad, who was planning to attend a meeting at the Congress office in Jammu, was stopped at Jammu Airport and was sent back to Delhi.

The Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha hit out at the government.

"It's not right for democracy. If mainstream political parties won’t visit, then who will go?" he asked.

Referring to Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, Azad, a former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, said, "Three former CMs are already under house arrest and one former CM is not being allowed to enter the state, it is a sign of intolerance."

Earlier on August 8, he was stopped at Srinagar Airport and was not allowed to enter Kashmir.

Several Congress leaders including its Jammu and Kashmir president Ghulam Ahmed Mir were detained by the police earlier this week.

The government earlier this month took away the special status of Jammu and Kashmir by abrogating Article 370 and also split the state into two union territories.

Meanwhile, the government claimed that the situation in the Valley was returning to normalcy as schools and other educational institutions reopened on Monday.
