A Ghaziabad-based lesbian couple who eloped sometime back have sought police protection owing to a threat from their family after objections were raised over their relationship. Radhika and Shobha, who consider themselves husband and wife, ran away from Shamli over a month ago.

The young couple approached the Sihani Gate police station on Tuesday and demanded protection citing a threat to their lives from Radhika's family. In a letter to the inspector in-charge of the police station, they declared themselves husband and wife and said that they had left their family over opposition to their homosexual relationship. They sought refuge in a colony near the police station where they are staying in rented accommodation. The inspector in-charge, Atish Kumar, has assured them of safety.

A missing persons complaint had been registered with the Patel Nagar police by Radhika's family wherein they stated that shortly after disappearing, she messaged her younger sister on WhatsApp saying she wanted to be away from the family and would return as an IAS officer. She also promised to attend her sister's wedding.

FRIENDS TO LOVERS

According to the missing persons complaint registered by Radhika’s family, they had rented a room in their house to Shobha, who hails from Bulandshahr. She and Radhika gradually developed a friendship, which later turned into love

According to the complaint, the family had rented a room in their house to Shobha, who hails from Bulandshahr, sometime back. She and Radhika gradually developed a friendship. The complaint letter also stated that Shobhia affectionately called Radhika, 'Madi'.

Their friendship eventually turned into love and the two committed themselves to each other. As evidence of their relationship, Radhika's mother has cited Shobha's diary where she has written about her blossoming relationship with Radhika. She would refer to Radhika — who had started adopting masculine traits — as her 'husband'.

However, the family, opposed to the relationship, ended Shobha's tenancy. The couple, however, continued seeing each other.

One day Radhika's mother asked her to withdraw money from the bank while returning from her tuitions. However, Radhika did not return home.
