In their bid to streamline radio cab services in the city, the traffic police have instructed private taxi services to register the details of all their drivers with the respective police stations. This move was mooted in the light of the recent rape incident involving an Uber driver.

BK Upadhyay, joint commissioner of police (traffic), said, "We took a meeting with several private cab companies including Meru, TABCab, etc on Tuesday evening, and have instructed them to register the details of their cab drivers with the local police."

The top official said they will be verifying the background of every cab driver. "We will be taking actions if we find out if any of the driver has any past criminal records. Action will be taken against both the driver and the company," said Upadhyay.

He added that they will be required to verify details of over 35,000 private cab drivers. The traffic police department has asked the cab services to register the details within 15 days.

Jagdish Purohit, MD, TABcab, said, "We welcome the department's stand to verify all the registered taxis and registered radio taxi operators. The real problem lies with cab services whose operation is based on mobile applications. They do not have any vehicle assigned to them and neither are their vehicles run by badge holders."
