Gangster Neeraj Bawana acquitted of murder attempt, convicted of illegally possessing arms

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Reetesh Singh acquitted Bawana of the charges dealing with attempt to murder, obstructing and assaulting a public servant and deterring him while discharging his duty and common intention.

A sessions court here on Wednesday acquitted Delhi's most wanted gangster Neeraj Bawana for attempting to murder a police, though convicting him of various charges under the Arms Act. His aide, Mohammed Rashid Khan, however was acquitted of all charges levelled against him.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Reetesh Singh acquitted Bawana of the charges dealing with attempt to murder, obstructing and assaulting a public servant and deterring him while discharging his duty and common intention.

However, the court found him guilty of illegally possessing arms and fixed September 8 for hearing argument on quantum of sentence. Khan was acquitted of all charges levelled against him.

After several failed attempts – 20, the Special Cell of the Delhi Police finally arrested Neeraj Shehrawat, better known as Neeraj Bawana, in April 2015. The arrest was dramatic as it involved a high-speed car chase and a shootout. Khan, Bawana's aide, who was with him that night, was also arrested.

Bawana's problems however are far from over. The gangster, who ran an extensive extortion racket targeting businessmen, is also wanted in several cases of murder. The 28-year-old, once Delhi's most wanted criminal, has almost 40 cases against him.

After his capture, Bawana revealed during interrogation that his maternal uncle – Congress leader Rambir Shokeen, was his mentor. Based on information gleaned from him, the special cell of the Delhi police even recovered an AK-47 and self-loading rifle SLR rifle from a plot belonging to Congress party leader. It was alleged that, while Shokeen provided the funds, Bawana provided the musclemen needed.

Bawana, had also allegedly told the police how he in the past had used his uncles political connections to strengthen his syndicates grasp in outer parts of Delhi. With Bawana's arrest, Delhi police had claimed to jolt what they called as 'beginnings of an organised crime syndicate.'
