Dreaded gangster Munna Bajrangi, who once dominated the crime scene in 1990s, was gunned down by an inmate inside Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat Jail on Monday.

The killing comes just days after his wife Seema Singh had alleged that a conspiracy was being hatched to kill him in a fake encounter.

Prem Prakash Singh alias Munna Bajrangi was shifted to Baghpat from Jhansi after hearing in an extortion case today. According to a report by The Hindustan Times, Bajrangi was killed around 5:30 am when the prisoners were being served tea.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered an inquiry into the incident. ‘Such an incident occurring inside jail premises is a serious matter. Strict action to be taken against those responsible,’ the Chief Minister was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Bajrangi was the prime accused in the 2005 murder of BJP lawmaker Krishnand Rai in Ghazipur. Bajrangi was shot dead after a brawl with the criminals lodged in the jail, UP Director General of Police OP Singh was quoted as saying by The HT.

On June 29, Bajrangi’s wife Seema Singh had said that senior STF officials were planning to kill her husband. The STF, however, had denied such allegations. In jail since 2009, Bajrangi used to operate extortion racket with help of his close aides.
