One person was killed and five others were injured in a shootout between two gangs in Amethi, the parliamentary constituency of AICC president Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday afternoon.

Old enmity between two influential families in Jagdishpur bloc of Amethi was stated to be the reason behind Tuesday's shootout. In 2000, one Ijrat Rasool was shot dead by men of then Block Chairman Rakesh Vikram and his brother Rajesh Vikram.

Since then, the two families have been indulging in gang war. A few months back, Ashfaque Rasool and his family members had fired indiscriminately at the vehicle of Rakesh and Rajesh but both, somehow, escaped unhurt. On Tuesday, Ashfaque had come to the bank with his personal bodyguards when Rajesh and Rakesh fired several rounds killing him on the spot.

In the ensuing firing between the two groups, five persons including a passerby sustained bullet injuries. They have been admitted at the CHC Jagdishpur.

Agitated supporters of Ashfaque indulged in heavy brick-batting and forced closure of the local market after the incident. The Amethi District Magistrate Shakuntala Gautam said that situation was brought under control after deployment of heavy police force in the area.

SP Amethi KK Gehlot has suspended SHO Jagdishpur JB Pandey for dereliction of duty. "A case has been registered against the assailants and teams have been formed to arrest them," said the SP.
