The commissioner of Bharat Scouts and Guides has lodged two separate complaints against two US-based online retailers – one for selling beer with Lord Ganesha’s image and the other for selling footwear with the Om symbol.

Naresh Kadyan lodged the complaints against yeswevibe.com and lostcoast.com.

Kadyan said the issue should not be viewed as a religious one as these symbols are considered to be source of positive energy for the people.

This isn’t the first case of Indians raising questions over international websites for allegedly hurting their sentiments. In 2013, an Australian-based brewery’s ginger beer carried images of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi, which upset the Hindu community. Although the company issued an apology, the continued selling the product in 2015.

US-based Rajan Zed, has led the protests against ‘defaming Hindu deities’ through several petitions. Zed, President of Universal Society of Hinduism, has sent letters to several organisations including gaming companies, movie studios and animation studios demanding that they remove certain aspects of movies that he finds offensive to Hinduism.

More recently, in January this year, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj demanded that Amazon Canada tender an unconditional apology after it was found that the site was selling Indian tricolour doormats.

A Twitter user brought to Swaraj’s attention that Amazon Canada was selling doormats featuring the Indian flag. A simple search on Amazon Canada by Gadgets 360 verified this claim (see screenshot) a few minutes after the tweets, though the products were later removed from Amazon Canada's catalogue.
