Waking up to the rising incidence of violence against women, Jammu and Kashmir State Commission for Women (SCW) has started one-stop-crisis-centre to help the women in distress at their doorsteps.

SCW has started a helpline where the women can lodge a complaint over the phone and without walking into the office of the SCW.

SCW has opened an exclusive phone line where women in distress can call or text or even WhatsApp to lodge a complaint. Officials of the SCW can immediately reach out to the women and help her to redress their grievances.

“Please circulate this number among all for lodging complaint regarding any issue or problem any woman is facing at home or office..J&K state commission for women has kept this number exclusively for women to text, WhatsApp, message or give miss call. The commission will contact you soon”, tweeted Nayeema Ahmad Mehjoor, chairperson of SCW.

Official figures reveal that the SCW has received 3000 complaints of domestic violence and harassment at the workplace in the last three to four years.

“People have no direct access. They have to come to our office and lodge complaint then we will see and call them. But the phone line gives them immediate and instant access to the commission. I am seeing since yesterday there are so many calls. I think people have problems particularly women. If this type of instant access is provided to them they will come and find a solution to their problems”, Mehjoor told DNA.

The helpline will act as the one-stop crisis centre where SCW officials can seek help from police and other agencies to help the women in the distress. “We can help in many ways. If she needs the support of police we can call the concerned police station, If she needs health-related help we can call the health centre.  If there is domestic violence,  we can intervene and send our team. There are different channels working”, she said.

Police figures reveal 2,920 cases of crime against women were reported in 2016.  These include 805 cases of kidnapping, 275 cases of rape, 157 cases of eve-teasing and 1,233 cases of molestation in 2016.
