Militants attacked a police bus, killing one and injuring three others near Zeewan on Friday, while Pakistan killed a BSF officer in a sniper attack on the Line of Control (LoC).

The attack on the bus took place on Friday evening when armed militants ambushed a police bus of the 9th battalion of the Indian Reserve Police, which was on its way to the armed police complex. Four cops sustained wounds and were shifted to the hospital where head constable Krishan Lal succumbed.

"Terrorists fired at a police bus in Zeewan, on the outskirts of Srinagar. Four cops were injured, of whom one succumbed. The others are stable," said a police spokesman. The three injured cops have been identified as constable Mehraj-ud-din, head constable Abdul Hamid and head constable Shabir Ahmad. Lashkar-e-Toiba has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Locals immediately helped the injured cops.

The attack comes against the backdrop of a security alert sounded by the police after intelligence agencies warned militant strikes on the eve of Bakri Eid in the Kashmir valley. Police said two groups of Jaish-e-Mohammad are still hiding either in south Kashmir or the fringes of Srinagar.

This is the fourth attack on cops in the past week. Four CRPF men and four Jammu and Kashmir policemen were killed and six others were injured when Jaish-e-Mohommad fidayeen stormed the District Police Lines in Pulwama on Auigust 26 . Three Pakistani fidayeens were later eliminated in 20-hour encounter.

On Monday, militants killed an assistant sub inspector (ASI) of Jammu and Kashmir police when they fired at him from point blank range in broad daylight in the Anantnag town of south Kashmir. On Thursday a sub inspector was injured when militants fired at him in Shopian district of south Kashmir.

In a separate incident, 50-year-old assistant sub inspector (ASI) of Border Security Force (BSF) was killed when the Pakistan army fired on Indian forward post along the Line of Control (LoC) in Krishna Ghati Sector of Poonch district.

A BSF spokesman said ASI Kamaljit Singh sustained bullet injuries and was evacuated from the post but succumbed later.

From Malkana of Bhatinda district in Punjab, ASI Singh had joined the BSF in 1988. "In this hour of grief, Border Security Force stands in solidarity with the bereaved family of the martyr and remains committed," ? said a BSF spokesperson?
