Fresh tension grips Shopian after another civilian succumbs to injuries

Tension has escalated in South Kashmir after another civilian injured in the army firing at Shopian succumbed in the hospital on Wednesday. 

The death toll in Saturday's army firing has now climbed to three in the Shopian district of South Kashmir.

Rayees  Ahmad had suffered grievous wounds when army troops opened fire on a group of stone pelters at Ganawpora village in Shopian on Saturday.  He was shifted to Sher e Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Srinagar where he succumbed at 3 am on Wednesday.

Two youth -- Javaid Ahmad Bhat and Suhail Javaid Lone –were killed when troops of 10 Garhwal unit fired at a stone-pelting mob at Ganawpora village on Saturday. Seven army men including Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) were injured in the stone pelting on their convoy.

Police have registered a case under Section 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 336 (endangering life) of Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) against the troops of 10 Garhwal unit led by a Major.  

Superintendent of Police,  Shopian Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar told DNA that they are keeping a close watch on the situation.

"Situation is gradually stabilising.  We are watchful about the situation. The burial of the youth will take place and we are monitoring the situation.  The situation is under control right now",  said Shriram.

Mobile Internet continues to remain shut in Shopian and Pulwama districts as a precautionary measure to avoid rumour mongering.

Shopian incident has created fissures in the BJP-PDP coalition government after chief minister Mehbooba Mufti vowed to take the investigations to a logical conclusion.  

BJP, however, has asked the government to withdraw FIR against the army and instead register a case against the stone pelters.

Meanwhile, the magisterial inquiry into the Shopian case has kicked off with officers asking people to record their statements.
