Four persons were killed and five others were injured when a massive explosion took place in a scrap shop in Sarvar Road area in Muzaffarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh on Monday.

The SSP Muzaffarnagar Anant Dev said that the blast took place when the scrap shop owner was breaking some scrap material and it exploded suddenly with huge sound. “Four people were killed in the explosion and five others were injured,” confirmed the SSP.

The SSP said that the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), a special team from the Army, bomb disposal squad and forensic expert teams were called in to investigate and ascertain the reasons behind the explosion.

The explosion was so massive that bodies of shop owner Tanzim and three others - Nissar, Shehzad and Nawazish -  were blown apart. Parts of their bodies went up to 50 metres away from the blast site. The Fire tenders were rushed to the site to douse the fire which had engulfed few adjacent shops.

Harish Bhadoria, the Circle Officer of Civil Police Station said that the injured were rushed to the district hospital where conditions of two were stated to be critical. The injured have been identified as Yusuf, Naushad, Shoaib and Kaiser Begum. The identity of another injured is being ascertained.

Police claimed that the scrap dealer used to buy metal scrap from different sources. There might be a possibility that some unexploded explosives might have come along with the metal scrap and when he tried to hammer it to open, it exploded.

Heavy police force has been deployed at the blast site and the entire area has been sealed. “Investigations are on by the ATS team from Meerut. Forensic experts have taken samples from the blast site. We will come to some conclusion only after the investigations are over and a report is submitted,” Dev said.

This comes a day after a live hand-grenade was found in a garbage in Aligarh. Earlier, a similar explosive device was found abandoned in a village in Deoria district.
