Four gangsters held after a cross-firing in Firozepur

Around 100 rounds were fired by both sides in which one of the gangsters was also injured.

Three days after a youth was allegedly killed in cross firing between police and gangsters in Sangrur district in Punjab, the police has arrested the four gangsters from outskirts of Ferozepur district after another round of intense cross-firing.

The gangster identified as Gahia Khan was wanted in as many as 12 cases pertaining to murder, attempt to murder and extortion registered against him at various places including Malerkotla, Patiala and Sangrur. He had been absconding since 2015 when he was declared a proclaimed offender. The other gangsters in their early thirties were identified as Buta Khan and Vishal.

The arrest followed a shootout with Special Task Force (STF) of Punjab police in Makhu town in Ferozepur early morning on Saturday. Around 100 rounds were fired by both sides in which one of the gangsters was also injured. The arrest was made after the police cornered the gangsters who were hiding in the house of a former Municipal Councilor (MC).

"We received information that they were hiding at Makhu in Zira. When we reached there they opened fire at us and after brief exchange of fire from both sides, the accused were arrested," said Ferozepur SSP, Gaurav Garg.

Punjab police had been on hunt for the gangsters following an incident of firing outside a polling station in Guru Har Sahai town on February 4, when voting was underway for Assembly elections in Punjab. However, no one was injured in the incident, but it had led to created panic among the voters.

The operation to arrest the gangsters had intensified after a youth, Bikramjit Singh, a factory worker from Malerkotla village was killed in cross-firing between police and the gangsters on February 9. It led to protests in the village where his family alleged that it was a fake police encounter and demanded probe.
