Four friends of an engineering student who died an unnatural death in West Bengal have been detained for questioning after the family members of the student alleged that he has been murdered, police said on Tuesday.

The victim, Tanmay Bhattacharya, a resident of Jalpaiguri town and a student of a private engineering college in Karnataka, had gone out with his friends for an outing to Notun Bridge on Monday, police said. Later that day police found Bhattacharya in a serious condition and rushed him to the hospital where he died.

His friends claimed that he hurt himself after he fell down from a motorcycle. The family members however are not convinced by the friends' story and have filed a police complaint against them.

A Ray, Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Kotwali police station, said four of the friends of Bhattacharya have been detained for questioning. The cause of death is yet to be determined. The police and family of the victim are currently waiting for the postmortem report.
