Senior Congress Party leader and former union minister for child and women development Krishna Tirath on Monday joined Bharatiya Janata Party.

The Bharatiya Janata Party welcomed the move by Tirath to join its ranks, stating that such inductions were due to the inspiration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"It is a question of ideology. I met BJP President Amit Shah to serve the people. I have come with this aim," Tirath, who was a member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly between 1984–2004 and the North West Delhi MP from 2004 till 2014, said after meeting Shah.

On what would be her role in the BJP, she said the party chief will decide that and added, "My role will be towards public service."

Congress appeared to be taken aback by Tirath's move to desert the party. Congress leader Ajay Maken said it showed the "nervousness and desperation" of BJP which is ready to bring any leader in the party fold ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally evoked a "lukewarm" response.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a vision for Delhi and everyone wants to be with the party that promises and delivers on growth. That has resulted in such a mass exodus from other parties by people wishing to join the BJP,” party secretary Shrikant Sharma said.

The Congress however refrained from commenting over the switch by the former union minister.

“We have received this information from you [the media]. When we know more about this, we shall speak in detail,” Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee chief Arvinder Singh Lovely told mediapersons.

Few days ago, former IPS officer Kiran Bedi and former Aam Aadmi Party leader Shazia Ilmi joined the party.

According to reports, a disgruntled Tirath had earlier sought a Congress Party ticket for one of her children to contest in the Delhi state assembly elections, but the central leadership of the party rejected the request. Following this, she has had a meeting with BJP president Amit Shah.

Krishna Tirath was born on March 3, 1955 and was a member of the 15th Lok Sabha of India.

Till now, she was representing the North West Delhi constituency of Delhi as a member of the Indian National Congress (INC).

She began her political career as a MLA in Delhi and was a member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly between 1984–2004. In 1998, she became the Minister for Social Welfare, SC and ST and Labour and Employment in the Sheila Dikshit-led Delhi government.

Dikshit saw her as a part of the dissident group and forced to resign from her post by dissolving her entire Cabinet.

On her resignation in 2003, she became Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Assembly.

In the 2004 elections, she beat Anita Arya of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was elected to parliament.

In 2009 elections, she was again elected from North West Delhi by defeating Meera Kanwaria of the BJP.

The Congress Party's election campaign leader Ajay Maken said that he was unaware of the development, and would get back to the media on the issue.
