Himanta Biswa Sarma has been named convener of the NDA's North East Democratic Alliance. Sarma was a former close aide of Tarun Gogoi is now second in charge of Assam's BJP government.

The decision was taken after BJP bigwigs held a meeting on the issue.

"The decision was taken to form a alliance of non-Congress parties in the north east which will be called North East Democratic Alliance taken. The Alliance will be constituent of the NDA and Himanta Biswa Sharma has been declared as the convener. The main Object of the alliance will be all round development of north east and better coordination among the states and Centre," said Ram Madhav, National General Secretary of BJP.

BJP formed its first ever government in Assam. Sarbanand Sonowal took oath as the state's CM today.
