A former Indian Army Captain went on a killing spree and allegedly bludgeoned six people to death, smashing their heads with an iron rod in Haryana's Palwal on Tuesday early morning.

Naresh Dhankhad, 45, a MSc topper from Haryana Agriculture University in Hisar, went on a rampage between 2 am and 4 am.

Dhankhad got married 10 years ago and separated from his wife four years later. He was the youngest of five brothers. "His brother, Chandrapal, claimed that Dhankhad was mentally ill and was being treated by a doctor in Muradnagar," the police said.

The police also added that he entered a private nursing home, attacked a woman and took shelter in the washroom. It was the first killing that gave police a vital clue in the case as the horror was captured on the nursing home's CCTV.

"He appeared to be mentally ill and looked highly aggressive. Preliminary investigations have revealed that he had strained relations with his wife and two children," said Palwal Superintendent of Police Sulochana Gajraj.

The second target was near a temple while the third man was killed near a Gurudwara.

Fourth victim was bludgeoned near Dher Colony in Palwal. At 3.52 am. Naresh reached a government primary school and killed his fifth target, the police said explaining the sequence of events.

Dhankhad then killed the sixth vicitm, a security guard deployed at a building near the courier office in a market on Palwal's Rusulpur Road.

The accused even attacked police officers at the time of his arrest.

The police said that the accused has been booked on multiple murder charges.

He was initially referred to the civil hospital at Faridabad and later sent to Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital for treatment as he was wounded, too.

The police said that his psychological evaluation will be carried out.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Abhimanyu Lohan said prima facie seemed that he carried out the killings without a reason. A high alert was sounded in the city, the police spokesperson said.

The killer was arrested after he was found injured in Palwal's Adarsh Colony area.

The police was alerted after six bodies were recovered early morning on Tuesday, from different localities, all within a radius of one kilometre.

The police also found an identity card on him that established his identity as a retired Army man.

A doctor at the hospital in Faridabad said that the accused was brought in a semi-conscious state by the police.
