Foreign experts will now help Kashmir to explore the unique character of the centuries-old art of the Sufiyana music, which is in the last throes in the Valley.

Experts from France, United Kingdom, Uzbekistan, Japan and India will be discussing the lost melodies in the two-day seminar starting Thursday.

Termed as mother of all Kashmiri musical art forms, the 600- year-old Sufiyana Kalam is a style of choral music played by five to six musicians, each playing an instrument and singing. The musical instruments mostly used are santoor, Kashmiri sitar and tabla.

With the advent of new musical art forms, the Sufiyana Kalam has slipped into oblivion. There are only few artists in Kashmir today who can play the Sufiyana music, said Professor Aijaz Ahmad Banday, director of the Centre of Central Asian Studies (CCS), University of Kashmir, which is organising the international seminar entitled ‘Synthesis of Raga and Maqam in Kashmiri Musical Culture’.

During the next two days the experts from France, United Kingdom, Uzbekistan, Japan and India will investigate unique character of Kashmiri Sufiyana Kalam in context of interrelations between Indian and Central Asian music in maqam- raga phenomenon.
