Flood situation remains grim in 4 districts of Assam

Over 38,000 people are affected by floods in four districts of Assam, including Kamrup (Metro district which comprises Guwahati, where one person died today after being electrocuted.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal reviewed the flood situation of the state, with Darrang being the worst affected district, official sources said.

One person identified as Dulal Malakar was killed after being electrocuted during flash floods in Guwahati this morning following incessant rains since last night.

The rains have caused floods in the capital city with water-logging in Zoo Road, R G Baruah Road, G S Road, Nabin Nagar, Anil Nagar and parts of Hatigaon, Ganeshguri, Hedayetpur and residential quarters of MLAs in Dispur.

Many schools declared a holiday today as buses could not ply and exams postponed in some others as school buildings going under waist-deep water, officials said.

Water logging caused massive traffic snarls in the city, inconveniencing many.

Flood situation in three districts of Lakhimpur, Darrang and Karimganj remained critical with 38,000 people reeling under the impact of the deluge that overran human habitation and crop land, an Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report said.

Embankments have been breached due to heavy rains in Lakhimpur and Biswanath districts, submerging roads in Karimganj, Majuli and Udalguri districts, the report said.

Animals and poultry have also been affected by the floods, particularly in Sonitpur district, the ASDMA said.

Reviewing the flood situation of the city with officials of the district administration and power department, Sonowal directed to constitute a joint team of district administration, Guwahati Municipal Corporation, Assam Police, SDRF and APDCL to check and identify all vulnerable points and carry out necessary rectification works immediately and submit compliance report to him within seven days.

Six persons had died during the June 13 flash floods in the city.
