The largest state in the country is dealing a double blow. And, Gorakhpur is bearing the brunt of both tragedies, one after another. Still overcast by the BRD Medical College tragedy, the hometown of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister is now completely cut-off by flash floods from Lucknow and the bordering Nepal.

Significantly, the decision to close the Lucknow-Gorakhpur state highway was taken by the state government when the Chief Minister was in his parliamentary constituency taking stock of the flood situation in and around Gorakhpur. It was after 19 years that the Gorakhpur was cut-off from the state capital.

The Gorakhpur-Deoria highway was also closed after the Rapti river overflowed its surrounding roads, bringing all crucial links to a halt.

Earlier, the Gorakhpur-Nepal Road was also closed after stretches of the concrete caved in at several places.

Supplies, including medical dispense, to Yogi's hometown have also been severely affected following the closure of Gorakhur-Lucknow state highway. The flood has affected about 22 districts and a population of over 15 lakhs. More than 36 people have so far been killed after Ghagra and Rapti rivers crossed danger mark.

About 11 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), PAC personnel and two Army choppers are working round the clock to rescue people to safer places. Besides, 182 medical teams have also been pressed into flood-hit areas.

There has been a loss of Rs 800 crore, including damage to crop and property, is estimated, sources said.

The Chief Minister is making aerial surveys and reaching out to the people of the submerged villages and ensuring relief over the last three days. "We will not allow a single death to happen due to hunger or lack of health care. The state government has sought four more NDRF teams to strengthen the rescue operation," Yogi Adityanath said.
