Five more infiltrators killed, toll climbs to 12

On the day the minister of state for defence Dr Subash Bhamre visited the forward areas to review security, the army foiled yet another infiltration bid and killed five ultras on the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri on Friday.

The incident occurred at Gawalthan in Uri when Army intercepted a group of militants who were trying to sneak into the valley. Troops immediately challenged them but they opened fire. Five militants were killed in the ensuing gunfight.

"Major infiltration bid has been foiled in Uri sector. Five terrorists have been killed so far. Operations are in progress", said Colonel Rajesh Kalia, defence spokesman at Srinagar.

With this, the toll of militants killed in multiple infiltration bids have climbed to 12 since Wednesday.

From Gurez to Machhil to Naugam to Uri Sectors, Indian Army units deployed along the LoC have foiled multiple attempts by Pakistan army to push armed infiltrators across. Large quantity of arms, ammunition and war like stores has been recovered from the possession of the slain ultras.

"Dr Bhamre appreciated the various measures instituted to strengthen the security posture and the good job being done by all the Security Forces. He urged all to continue the strict vigil and deal firmly with all elements inimical to national interests", said Colonel Kalia.

Earlier Dr Bhamre was was briefed by Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen JS Sandhu on the prevailing situation in the Valley. He was also briefed on the close coordination among all the government agencies towards bringing back normalcy in the region, the defence spokesman added.

Official figures reveal that in the current year so far, 22 infiltration attempts have been foiled and 34 armed intruders eliminated on the LoC. Data released by Ministry of Home Affairs reveals that there have been 364 infiltration attempts last year compared to 121 in 2015.

Estimated net infiltration (number of militants who managed to sneak in) was 112 in 2016 compared to 33 in 2015. Similarly 222 infiltration attempts were made in 2014 and estimated net infiltration was 65. In 2013, 277 infiltration attempts were made and 97 militants managed to sneak in.
