Finally, India seems to have woken up to the pitfalls and dangers of cyber-crimes that are hitting at both country's infrastructure and also at individual levels. Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday announced constituting a five-member expert group of leading academicians and professionals to prepare a roadmap for effectively tackling the menace.

What are the challenges for country's cyber environment?
India, a fast growing economy, is highly susceptible and vulnerable to international and domestic Cyber attacks. There has been almost 40 percent annual increase in cyber-crimes registered in the country during the past 2-3 years. Phising and ransomware are the new threat in the virtual world of computing devices that can rob individuals of their precious money in ingenious ways. India is considered to be the ransomware capital of Asia Pacific with 11 per cent victims of this form of virtual extortion. In addition to Ransomware, 56 per cent of cybercrime victims in India have experienced online bullying, online stalking, online hate crime or other forms of online harassment.

Besides, highly secure government websites that have vital data and secrets are also become prone to cyber attacks. In the recent past even the websites of PMO and defence ministry have been hacked by the hackers based in China and Pakistan.

What is the current status of Cyber security in India?
India is among the worst performing countries in terms of cyber security. It does not have a robust system of firewalls and no body of cutting edge professionals who can prevent serious cyber attacks. The cyber crime cells even in Metros are in a nascent stage to crack cases as they do not have experts and requisite softwares.
To thwart cyber attacks, India depends largely on Cert-In (computer emergency response team) under the department of electronics and information technology (DEITY) which itself is in nowhere compared to developed countries. Even the top level intelligence and security agencies have to take outside professional help in times if exigencies.

What has the expert group been asked to do?
The expert group has been asked to prepare a Road Map for effectively tackling the Cyber Crime in the country and give suitable recommendations on all its facets.
It has also been assigned to recommend possible partnerships with public and private sector, NGOs, international bodies and international NGOs to suggest any other special measures and steps to tackle Cyber Crimes.

Who all constitute the expert group?
The five-member Expert Study Group comprises of director general CDAC (Pune) Dr Rajat Moona, Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru), Professor Krishnan, director general Cert-In, Dr Gulshan Rai, Professor of Computer Science, IIT- Kanpur, Dr Manindra Aggarwal Professor IIIT- Bengaluru Dr D Dass. Joint Secretary of Centre State division in union home ministry Kumar Alok will be the convenor.
