Trivendra Singh Rawat, among the lesser known names in Uttarakhand politics, took the oath of chief minister in the presence of top BJP leadership that included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and cabinet ministers Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda and Uma Bharti.

Rawat, 56, a trusted RSS worker is known for his fierce loyalty to the BJP and closeness to Amit Shah. He has a clean image with no cases against his name. Rawat's wife works as a teacher in a government school and has two daughters.

The main objective of our government will be to end poverty, stop migration and usher development in the state, said Rawat after administering oath as chief minister.

Rawat was chosen above front runners like Satpal Maharaj and Prakash Pant who were accommodated as cabinet ministers in the cabinet.

Keeping a tab on ambitions for the top post, Satpal Maharaj and Prakash Pant were given the task to propose Rawat's name in the meeting of the party legislatures.

Maharaj had crossed over from the Congress to the BJP before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Though Maharaj did not contest the 2014 polls, he rigorously participated during the campaigning for the party in States across the country and came out a winner from Chaubatiakhal seat.

The BJP did not disappoint Congress detractors by including at least three MLAs who had switched over to the party.

Congress renegade Harak Singh Rawat who was at the forefront of the rebellion against Harish Rawat government in 2016 and Yashpal Arya who defected from Congress and joined BJP just a day before the announcement of assembly elections got the plum post of cabinet ministers.

Arya had crossed over to the BJP after Congress denied candidature to his son Sanjeev Arya. The BJP, however, gave candidature to Mr. Arya and his son. While Yashpal Arya is an MLA from the Bajpur seat, his son is a BJP MLA from the Nainital seat.

Rekha Arya, an MLA from the Someshwar constituency, got the post of minister of state in Rawat cabinet. She also had sided with the BJP when Harish Rawat sought a trust vote in last year and later crossed over to the BJP.

Another cabinet minister Madan Kaushik is a 52-year-old BJP MLA from the Haridwar constituency.

The other ministers in Rawat cabinet are Arvind Pandey, who won the Gadarpur constituency, Subodh Uniyal who won from the Narendranagar constituency and Dhan Singh Rawat, BJP MLA from the Srinagar seat.
