Five dead as showers continue to lash Tamil Nadu

Widespread rains were forecast for Tamil Nadu in next 24 hours though there was some respite on Tuesday for the city and neighbouring districts, a day after the north east monsoon dumped heavy showers leaving five persons dead and disrupting life in several areas due to waterlogging. Officials said four persons died in rain-related incidents in different places since Monday taking the toll to five. One person was killed in a wall collapse in Thanjavur district on Monday.

Two persons died at suburban Anakaputhur on Monday night after being struck by lightning while two others died in rain related incidents at Cuddalore and Nagapattinam districts, said official sources. The Met department has forecast widespread rain or thundershowers with scattered heavy to very heavy falls in coastal areas in the next 24 hours due to the vigorous monsoon, which set in over the state last week.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday Municipal Administration Minister SP Velumani claimed that Tamil Nadu government has done better than the United States, London and Bengaluru in carrying out the flood preparedness work.

The first spell of the North East Monsoon that hit the southern coasts a few days ago brought parts of Chennai and its adjoining districts to its knees with waterlogging reported in several areas exposing unpreparedness of the civic authorities.

"There were floods in the US, London and Bengaluru but here there was no waterlogging at all," Velumani told reporters after holding a review meeting at the Greater Chennai Corporation. When the reporters questioned his claim's, the minister accused the media of supporting the opposition parties and not broadcasting the "good works" of the government.

The upper air cyclonic circulation over Southwest Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka moved westward and was now positioned over Gulf of Munnar, Director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre, S Balachandran said.

He said that in the last 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Tuesday, both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry witnessed widespread heavy rains with Seerkazhi in Nagapattinam District in the Cauvery delta region recording the highest of 31 cm. In Chennai, Nungambakkam weather station recorded 12 cm rainfall while Meenambakkam Airport 17 cm.

S Balachandran Director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre said Seerkazhi in Nagapattinam district in the Cauvery delta region recording the highest of 31 cm.
