In a massive security breach, five convicts, four of whom were serving lifers, escaped from the Central Jail in Buxar, about 125 kilometres from Patna, on the interceding night of Friday and Saturday. Three prison officials have been suspended in this regard.

Buxar district magistrate Raman Kumar said the prisoners scaled the jail boundary wall, and iron rods, pipes and some clothes were found at the spot from where they escaped. He immediately sent a report to the state home department that has ordered a probe into the matter.

The jail administration said the five prisoners - Upendra Sah (Bhojpur), Pradip Singh (East Champaran), Sonu Pandey (Bhojpur) and Deodhari Rai (Saran) - all serving life term and Sonu Singh (Buxar), had feigned illness and had been transferred to the medical ward of the prison, from where they escaped through a window. Officials said the thick fog may have helped them flee.

IG (Prisons and correctional services) Anand Kishor formed a two member investigation team comprising state prisons inspectorate Joint Secretary-cum-Director Administration Rajiv Kumar Verma and DIG (administration) Shivendra Priyadarshi and asked them to file their probe report within 24 hours.

Kishor also suspended Buxar central jail's chief senior warden Kameshwar Paswan and wardens Upendra Das and Rajkumar Ram for slackness in duty.

Buxar Police is conducting search operations in an effort to find the escaped prisoners and teams are also conducting raids in their home districts. Adjoining Uttar Pradesh border has been sealed to prevent them from escaping into the neighbouring poll-bound state.

This is the third major jailbreak incident after the ones in Bhopal (MP) in October and Nabha (Punjab) in November.
