Five youths in their early 20s were arrested on Wednesday morning by the Delhi Police for beating up three madrassa students on March 26. Ashu, Karamvir, Sachin, Sagar and Aditya, residents of Begumpur in South Delhi, were arrested from their residences early in the morning. The five arrested boys were produced in court on Wednesday and remanded to judicial custody for one day.

An FIR has been lodged and the youths have been charged with voluntarily causing grievous harm under sections 323, 325, 341 and 506 read with section 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

Sources in the police claim that while unemployed, of the five, some are students and one is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Engineering (BE) through correspondence. The five youths are residents of sector 21 in Ramesh Enclave -- same as the three madrassa students they attacked. After interrogation and statements from all involved, varying accounts have emerged of what actually took place at the park.

According to Sonu, a neighbour, 18-year-old madrasa student Dilkash, and his two classmates -- Ajmal and Naeem -- were apparently walking in the park at six in the evening after offering namaz at the local masjid. They were stopped on the road by the five boys who were allegedly on motorbikes. "They three boys were told to say "Jai mata ki" to which one of boys obliged. However, they then started harassing the boys and telling them to say it louder." Recalling the incident as told to him, Sonu added that the five boys -- all residents of the same locality -- then picked up sticks that were lying about and started beating the boys.

The beating resulted in minor injuries for two, while Dilkash's arm was fractured.

Dilkash, Ajmal and Naeem, from Bihar's Purnia district, came to Delhi last year to study at the Faiz-ul-uloom Ghausia madrasa in Ramesh Enclave's Mohammadi Masjid.
