1. Ramesh Agarwal
An RTI activist from Chhattisgarh, Agarwal was allegedly fired at by unidentified men at his office around July 2012.
According to freerameshagarwal.blogspot.in, he was "raising concerns about the social and environmental impacts of rapid and indiscriminate industrial expansion." The website also says that Agarwal had filed several RTI applications.
2. Premkumar Jha
A public relations officer of the Bhrashtachar Atyachar Virodhi Samiti, Jha was also a RTI activist. He had reportedly sought information regarding illegal construction in Vasai-Virar near Mumbai. He was credited with exposing cases of corruption.
How was he killed? Jha was shot dead outside his home in Virar in February 2013.
3. Ram Kumar Thakur
On March 23, 2013, Ram Kumar Thakur was shot dead. He had reportedly found misappropriation of Rs40 lakh in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in his Bihar village .Thakur had also reportedly found evidence against his village sarpanch by using the RTI.
4. Suresh Kumar
Suresh Kumar, an activist from Haryana, was killed around May 2013.
He had filed an RTI application to get details of the developmental works in his village. The accused attacked Kumar when he was on his way home on a motorcycle.
5. Pale Ram Chauhan
A 52-year-old from Raipur, Chauhan was known for his work against the sand mafia. He was also allegedly shot dead, around July 2013.
His family had said that he was killed by three men who were connected to the sand mafia. Chauhan had filed several complaints with the district authorities and the police.
