The Internet is currently losing its mind over the supposed sneakiness of a pet fish that managed to escape its owner. The truly comic series of events leading to the departure of the fish, has led social media to compare the incident to the movie Finding Nemo.

Brooke Essick, 18, from Kernersville, North Carolina, owned a Betta fish named ‘Dane’, a type of freshwater fish that often has colourful fins. When Essick noticed that Dane’s bowl was dirty, she transferred him to a jar of water so she could clean the bowl. Just for kicks, she had her friend Macy Carmichael record the job on her phone.

Cleaning done, Essick proceeded to pick up Dane with her hand and plop him into the newly-cleaned bowl, not wanting to contaminate it with the dirty water in the jar. However, while the transfer itself seemed successful, the two noticed a few minutes later that Dane was floating in the bowl, belly up.

Esseck and Charmichael attempted to prod Dane to check for signs of life, but he seemed unresponsive. So, left with no other choice, the duo decided to record themselves saying goodbye to the little fish as they flushed his body down the toilet. What happened next instead, was something neither expected. Just as Essick popped the fish into the toilet and hit the flush, she noticed him moving and attempting to swim to the bottom. “Oh my God, he was swimming!” she screamed in the video.

Essick posted the video on Twitter saying, “Gone but never forgotten,” fondly remembering her lost fish. Those with experience caring for Betta fish, claim Dane wasn’t playing dead but was just in shock when transferred to the new bowl, as the fish are sensitive to changes in the PH balance of their surroundings. Of course, that didn’t stop commenters from pointing out that Dan had “pulled a Nemo”, referring to the animated movie where an aquarium fish plays dead in order to escape. Either way, it looks like Dane is home free, but Essick wants him to know that she tried her best to care for him.
