A first-year student at the Hyderabad Central University committed suicide on Saturday, ANI reported. The student's body was taken to hospital and the police is investigating the matter.

University spokesperson, Vipin Srivastava said, "The student who has committed suicide was MFA (Painting) Student."

The university has been witnessing sporadic protests since the suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula in January.

Rohith's death on January 17 had sparked massive nationwide protests, resulting in a fierce slugfest with a string of political parties and Dalit organisations siding with the students and accusing the BJP government and the university administration of being "anti-Dalit".

Students had demanded the removal of Appa Rao from the post of VC. Vice Chancellor Podile Appa Rao and others were booked under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and for abetment of Rohith's suicide.
