After 60 hours, Mayor and state fire minister Sovan Chatterjee said that fire at the Bagree Market had been contained. The fire department filed an FIR against directors and CEO of the market. Chatterjee told mediapersons that the fire has been arrested. "The obstructions at the corridors and in front of shops at all Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) markets would be removed. "Firefighters had trouble reaching the source of fire owing to the showcases and obstructions in the corridor. The KMC, police and fire department will implement it," Chatterjee said.

In another development, an FIR has been filed against owners and CEO of Bagree Market. "The FIR has been filed at Burrabazar PS on the basis of the complaint filed by the fire department. The FIR is against the directors of Bagree Estate Pvt Ltd Radha Bagree and Varun Raj Bagree and the CEO Krishna Kumar Kothari," said joint commissioner of police (crime) Praveen Kumar Tripathi.

Sources at Burrabazar PS said that the accused were charged with sections 11C, 11J, 11L of the West Bengal Fire Service Act and 120B, 436 of the IPC.

Officials of Kolkata Police visited Kothari's residence in Burrabazar area but realised that he does not stay there anymore. Kothari had allegedly charged huge amount of money from shop owners to install fire safety measures.

Many opined that that the entire building should be razed as it was dangerous but the business, president of the traders association refused. "The building is strong enough to endure such fire. All it requires is repairs. What is worrying is that where will the required amount of money come from? People have lost everything. Many had loaned a lot of money and bought goods worth crores of rupees ahead of the pujas," Ashutosh Singh, president of Bagree Market Central Kolkata Traders Welfare Association told DNA.
