A day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the BJP-led Assam government was conspiring to kick out Bengalis who had been working and staying there, out of the state, a Gauhati High Court lawyer filed an FIR against Mamata for her comments.

The lawyer, Tailendra Nath Das, who is also the president of the Labourer Welfare Board, filed the FIR filed at Latasil Police Station in Guwahati on Thursday.

The complaint said that content of the speech by Mamata at Birbhum district 'contained inflammatory materials which promote or attempt to promote enmity between different group on the grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc, residing in the state of Assam'.

He also alleged that Mamata's speech was in contempt of Supreme Court and requested authorities to look into the matter and take necessary steps.

West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh on Thursday brushed aside Mamata's allegations saying that no Bengali from Assam had been driven out. "In an attempt to check illegal infiltration into the state, the state government is preparing a data of residents there and in the primary list many people's name had been excluded which would later be included. Even our own MLAs and other leaders' names have gone missing from the list. Mamata is trying to create an issue out of everything," Ghosh said.

Senior TMC leaders are however, unfazed of the case filed against Mamata. "She has been fighting for the cause of Bengalis and against any injustice meted out to them. Protest against atrocities against Bengalis in Assam will continue. We will not be intimidated by these cases," said state education minister and TMC secretary general Partha Chatterjee.

On Wednesday, speaking at a public rally in Birbhum district, Mamata had said warned the Assam government that the TMC will not take it sitting if Bengalis are harmed in Assam. "It is a plan to kick out Bengalis from Assam. It is a norm of democracy that citizens of one state would travel to another state for employment. Bengalis who had been living in Assam for 30 years have now been conspired to be kicked out of the state. Their names are being struck off from the national register of citizens. Already one person has committed suicide because of that. I warn them not to play with fire. Even people get hurt, we will not take it sitting. There are several people from Assam who work in Bengal. We have welcomed them and we want a similar treatment to Bengalis who work outside the state," she had said.
