Central Railway is expected to open a tender on Tuesday to choose a firm that will carry out the Preliminary Engineering-cum-Traffic (PECT) survey for a new line between Pune and Nashik. This line, at a total length of 265 kilometres, will run between Chakan, Rajgurunagar, Peth, Manchar, Narayangaon, Ale, Sangmeshwar Nandershingote and Sinner. CR will be spending Rs 30 lakhs for the survey.

The PECT, as the name suggests, is preliminary work to decide the engineering technicalities of a railway line.

"Pune and Nashik are two of the biggest cities of Maharashtra after Mumbai and having a direct line between the two places will give a boost to industrial activity in the state. Chakan is a major automobile hub. There is an airport coming up, there are industrial hubs planned on some places on this route. It seems like a project that the state government will be willing to pitch in financially," said a railway official.

The plan to have a rail line between Pune and Nashik is almost two decades old but was never keenly followed by either the state government or the railways in the past. Railway minister Suresh Prabhu during his Railway Budget speech of February last year had allotted Rs 1.03 crores for this survey and CR officials said over the period of a few months, this amount will be spent.
