Four-time Congress MP from Madhya Pradesh, Jyotiraditya Scindia has emerged as the front-runner for the position of leader of the Congress parliamentary party in Lok Sabha.

DNA has learnt from reliable sources that the party had narrowed down the choice between Jyotiraditya Scindia and senior Congress leader Kamal Nath. However, the senior Congress leader showed more interest in becoming the face of the Congress party in the upcoming Madhya Pradesh elections and spearhead its campaign.

BJP has been in power for 15 years and the Congress feels that this time around, if it fights the election well, then it can ‘wrest the state’ from the saffron party.

Mallikarjun Kharge, the current leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha has already been accommodated as head of the Public Accounts Committee. The head of the committee enjoys a cabinet rank and Kharge, a seasoned campaigner will serve his remaining tenure.

Sources state that there are two reasons for this decision. First, Scindia is close to Congress VP Rahul Rahul Gandhi and his appointment, will see the party undergo a long-awaited transition from the old guard to the young.

Secondly, Kamal Nath, a seasoned politician, is likely to find favour with other senior Congress leaders like Digvijaya Singh, Suresh Panchuri, Kantilal Bhuria.

Last time around, Jyotiraditya Scindia was the head of the campaign committee chairman for Congress in Madhya Pradesh but was unable to deliver.

On the other hand, Kamal Nath who was brought into politics by Sanjay Gandhi in the 1970s is a senior leader who will command respect once he assumes charge of Madhya Pradesh. Sources in the Congress indicate that this is change is likely to be affected before the Monsoon Session of the Parliament unless and unless circumstances demand a different decision.
