In a bid to end stigma against manual scavengers, many such workers liberated by an NGO, will tie a rakhi to PM Narendra Modi on the eve of Raksha Bandhan, reports IANS.
A group of five women will hand over 1,000 rakhis made by widows from Vrindavan and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The women have been looked after by NGO Sulabh International. The idea behind the event is to break the society's perception that widows are inauspicious.
“Tying Rakhis to the Prime Minister will be a major symbol against the existing stigma towards manual scavengers. It is a sad thing that widows have been considered inauspicious and manual scavengers as untouchables,” said Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh International.
