Fewer than 80 active militants in J&K: Police

For the first time in 24 years of insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir, security forces were able to restrict the number of active combatant militants to fewer than 80 in 2013. Figures released by the J&K Police in its annual Crime Gazette 2013 reveal that there are only 76 militants active in the entire state.

Of these, 61 ultras are active in the Valley while 15 militants are operating in the Jammu division. However, there are 1,447 Over Ground Workers (OWGs) — workers of the militants entrusted with the job of providing logistical support, such as food, money, hideouts, couriers — to the active combatants.
