Priya Ramani, the first to accuse Union Minister MJ Abkar of sexual harassment, welcomed the mininster's resignation from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The main Opposition, Congress, also termed it as a "victory of truth".

Ramani said she looked forward to the day when she would also get justice in court. "As women, we feel vindicated by Akbar's resignation. I look forward to the day when I will also get justice in court," she said.

Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi said, "The resignation is a vindication of the power of truth. More strength to India's women."

Chaturvedi hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what she said was his "silence" in the matter. "The women of the country are saying the time for this is up and threat to silence voices can no longer be the norm or acceptable," she added.

Ragini Nayak, another Congress spokesperson, said the resignation only came due to persistent pressure put by women. "We also think that it is a time for a fair trial so that justice prevails. This country has a rule of law and the Congress believes that any allegation leveled against anybody must pass this test of justice. We hope and wish that all women fighting this tough battle are heard and finally justice is imparted," she said.

The party also said the brazen and arrogant use of power by deploying a battery of 97 lawyers against one brave woman and allowing the accused to continue in his role had dismayed the people of India.

Earlier, Congress President Rahul Gandhi had said, "It's about time everyone learns to treat women with respect and dignity. I'm glad the space for those who don't, is closing. The truth needs to be told loud and clear in order to bring about change."
