A Goa minister said on Saturday said veterinarians have been asked to treat stray cattle who have become "non-vegetarian" and "turn them into vegetarian" again.

Michael Lobo, the minister for waste management in Pramod Sawant government, was speaking at a function at Arpora village in North Goa on Saturday when he said that 76 animals from Calangute were rescued and taken to a gaushala for treatment.

Lobo, a BJP MLA from Calangute assembly seat, said the animals had "turned non-vegetarian" and refused to eat gram or other vegetarian food when they were taken to the gaushala.

“We have lifted 76 cattle from Calangute and taken them to the gaushala where they are being looked after. The cattle had turned non-vegetarian cattle here. We always say cattle are vegetarian. But cattle from Calangute are non-vegetarian. These cattle do not eat grass. They neither eat gram nor special feed which is given to them,” Lobo was quoted as saying by IANS.

The BJP minister said that the cattle are now being treated at the gaushala by veterinarians.

"Veterinary specialists have been roped in to treat them with medicine. It will take four to five days to turn the cattle into vegetarians once again,” he said.

Lobo said this happened because these stray cattle had been feeding on leftover chicken scraps and stale fried fish from restaurants and their system has become like that of humans.

Earlier, they were vegetarians, he claimed, and moved on after smelling non-vegetarian food but now they only eat such food. He said besides eating leftovers from garbage, they were also given non-vegetarian food by villagers.

The minister also said that the stray cattle was one of the major causes of accidents of two-wheelers and that is why they are now being shifted to the gaushalas.
