Father beheads nine year old daughter in Jammu and Kashmir

Shock and anger has swept across Jammu and Kashmir after a nine-year-old was beheaded allegedly by her father to settle scores with his relative in remote Dharna village of Poonch district of Jammu division. Police said they have detained the man for questioning after the locals alleged that he beheaded the girl to settle scores with a relative by implicating him in some case.

"Preliminary statement given by the people says that the father has beheaded the girl. We are looking into the case from all angles. We can't say anything as yet," said Shamsheer Hussain, senior superintendent of police, Poonch district.

The incident came to fore when locals found a headless body of nine-year of Masrat Naz near her home. They informed the police who recovered the body and torso from the area. A case was registered and the body was sent for the post-mortem.

"According to people, the father of the girl had a land dispute with a close relative. People said he had threatened him of implicating him in some case," said Hussain.
This is probably the second such case that has shocked J&K in as many years. In 2012, police arrested a man of Kupwara district for slitting the throat of his five-year-old daughter Asra Shafi in 2011. The motive behind the killing was to earn ex-gratia and a government job.
