Criticising the state government for not being serious on the issue of farmers' suicides, leader of opposition in the state assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil on Wednesday demanded the resignation of state agriculture minister Eknath Khadse.

Addressing a press conference, Vikhe-Patil said despite the fact that 622 farmers have committed suicide since January 2015, the government has given a report to the Centre stating that only three farmers have killed themselves by writing suicide notes. This proves, he added, that how serious the government and its agriculture minister is about this grave issue. He pointed out that in Vidarbha alone 448 farmers have committed suicide and despite such a grave situation there are no district level or division level meetings on water scarcity issues.

Criticising the recent transfers of senior police officers, Vikhe-Patil said that even after Nagpur police commissioner KK Pathak was in the news for his inefficiency because of law and order problems in that city, he was transferred to Pune — a city which is on terror radar. Vikhe-Patil said despite being inefficient, Patahak was being shielded by the chief minister and he was promoted. He alleged that crime against women was on the rise and 181 cases were registered in January itself, but CM Devendra Fadnavis was not ready to appoint a separate home minister for the state.

Demanding a white paper on tolls in the state, Vikhe-Patil said that PWD minister Chandrakant Patil had announced that Mumbai entry point tolls can be done away with, but Fadnavis made it clear in Pune on Tuesday that Mumbai entry point tolls and Mumbai-Pune Expressway toll cannot be abolished. The opposition leader said that BJP is betraying the people of the state as a toll-free Maharashtra was included in its election manifesto.
