Farmers in Junagadh on Thursday gave the state a 48-hour ultimatum to implement the online registration for procurement of groundnut at Minimum Support Price (MSP). It has also complained that procurement agencies are taking 300gm of groundnut per bag (35 kg) free of cost.
The state government had earlier announced that it will procure groundnut at an MSP from Labh Pacham. Junagarh farmers complained that while the government had promised online registration to avail the MSP, the system was not active and farmers had to visit procurement centres when Rabi season was in full swing. "Farmers have to waste days and money to get registered. Online registration will solve this problem," said Atul Shekhda, convenor of Khedut Hitrakshak Samiti – Junagadh.
Local farmers told DNA that close to 1,000 farmers had registered themselves at the procurement centre in Majevdi.
Mohammad Sida of Galivada village in Junagadh taluka said that farmers were told to give 300 gm of groundnut free of cost per bag. "This way, farmers will incur a loss of Rs155 per bag. They sell 50, 100 bags. So the final loss is significant. We have sought clarification on taking extra groundnut from farmers but agencies are silent about it," Sida told DNA.
Farmers also said that there was a cap of 70 bags for procurement at MSP. If a farmer has more bags to sell, he will have to come again. Ïf there is a chaos in the initial stage, what will happen when farmers ill start flocking to sell the produce, asked Shekhda.
A local official in the agriculture department acknowledged the hiccup in online registrations, saying that there were a few bottlenecks in the software, but expressed confidence that online registration would be active Friday onwards. She, however, denied that farmers have to give groundnut free of cost.
