Reacting to statements of TMC leaders about the well-being of farmers in Bengal, Union Commerce and Industries Minister Suresh Prabhu said that the farmers across the country were reaping benefits of welfare schemes implemented by the Central government.

Interacting with mediapersons on Sunday, when Prabhu was made aware of TMC MPs Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O Brien's claims about how the state government was helping farmers in West Bengal, he said, "People are free to say anything. What I am saying is on the basis of reports. Not only in Bengal but the BJP-government has been taking several steps across the country for the welfare of farmers and if they are living in improved conditions it is because of those."

However, when asked about the 1,092 farmers' suicide cases from January till May this year — in Maharashtra alone — Prabhu said, "What you are saying is true, but that is a result of policies of the past government. Farmers' suicide cases are not new. The future of farmers though, is going to be better. Has any government in India guaranteed farmers 150 per cent of the price of their produce? This is not only a plan, but has been approved by the Cabinet. Farmers of India will get more than their expectation. An elaborate policy of procurement, processing, cold storage and marketing of crops has been prepared, with prioritising farmers' welfare," he said.

He further claimed, "About 69 per cent of the people of India want Narendra Modi back as the Prime Minister on the fourth year of the government. That is because what this government has done in four years is more than what had been done in 70 years prior to that."
