Amid rising protest by farmers against the new farm laws, the central government has invited a conglomerate of 31 farmers’ bodies from Punjab for talks in the national capital today. The protesting farmers agreed to meet after Union Agriculture Secretary Sanjay Agarwal extended an invitation for talks to the All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC).

Earlier, on October 8 Sanjay Agarwal had written a letter to the agitating farmers requesting for a meeting which was rejected. The farmers said they did not participate in the meeting because the letter sent by the government stated that they have not understood the law properly and an explanation needs to be given. This irked AIKSCC who said, “Farmers very well understand the laws and the intention behind them, which is why we rejected the meeting.”

However, the second attempt by Sanjay Agarwal, the top bureaucrat in the agriculture ministry has been accepted by the farmers and the meeting is scheduled for today.

The All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC) said the farmers have agreed to the meeting because they don't want to be unreasonable and stubborn.

“It has been decided today to accept the offer. But the protests will continue. Moreover, we are not expecting much from the talks. We have decided to meet so that an impression is not created that Punjab farmers are stubborn and are being unreasonable,” said Dr Darshan Pal, convener of the AIKSCC

Meanwhile, some influential names invited for the talks are Balbir Singh Rajewal, Ruldu Singh Mansa, Major Singh Punnawal and Indrajit Singh Kot Buddha of Kisan Sangharsh

Thousands of farmers in Punjab, Haryana and several other states have been protesting since the government introduced these Bills in the Lok Sabha on September 14, the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

The Bills seek to replace the Farmers` Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Ordinance, 2020, and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Ordinance, 2020 promulgated on June 5.
