For the first time, the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) is all set to take action against a doctor at Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital, Pune, for luring doctors for post-graduate degrees from a foreign university, not recognised in India. According to an MMC member, the doctors who were served notices for practising and displaying fake degrees, named Dr Sangram Jadhav of Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital as the coordinator. "We then decided to cross-check the claims by these doctors. The Website of University of Seychelles, which provides these degrees, had details about Dr Jadhav being their exam coordinator. It also had mention of Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital, where he worked," said an MMC member. Dr Kishor Taori, president of MMC, said that they are in the process of sending notice to the hospital, asking about its role.

He said that an explanation will also be asked on how the hospital has signed a memorandum of understanding with a foreign university without permission from the government. So far, 30 doctors from Maharashtra have been summoned for displaying foreign degrees at their clinics that are not recognised by the Medical Council of India and the MMC. "Almost all of them gave us chilling accounts of how they were lured by this hospital for the course with the University of Seychelles. Each doctor paid a hefty fee, like $6,000 and more, for the degree. The notice will be sent to the hospital and to the doctors within a week," said Dr Taori.

He added that the MMC is also sending details to the state government. "The fake degree racket should stop. Doctors are falling prey to the gimmicks by such universities. Even patients are confused with these fake degrees," said Dr Taori. MMC has decided not to take any action against the 30 doctors who were summoned for displaying fake degrees at their clinics. "They have apologised and pulled down the degrees. We are writing to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) against the Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital for violating ethics. Since the PMC is authorised for giving registration to the hospital, it will be their prerogative to take action," said Dr Taori.

When contacted, Dr Jadhav said that he is just an exam coordinator and the hospital is the exam-conducting centre. "I have no role to play other than being an exam coordinator. I do that as per the hospital's direction," said Dr Jadhav. Rekha Dubey, CEO of the hospital, said that the hospital's agreement copy with the University of Seychelles is already being sent to the MMC. "We have already sent our statement and agreement copy to MMC. Our mandate is to only conduct exams. We are not offering the degree. It is for the doctors appearing for the exam who have to decide if the degree is recognised by the MCI or MMC or not," said Dubey.
