Under fire for skipping the wreath-laying ceremony of the police martyrs, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh on Sunday visited the residence of slain Station House Officer (SHO) Feroz Ahmad Dar.

Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists had killed and disfigured six cops, including Station House Officer of Achabal police station Feroz Ahmad Dar when they ambushed his vehicle at Tajwara village in south Kashmir's Anantnag district.

What created a stir was the politicians staying away from the wreath-laying ceremony, both at Anantnag and Srinagar. Wreath-laying for constable Tasveer Ahmad was held at District Police Lines, Srinagar, just 200 metres away from the Legislative Assembly, where leaders including Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh were present for the special session.

Accompanied by Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Shesh Paul Vaid and Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, Munir Ahmad Khan, Nirmal Singh offered his condolences to the bereaved family. He assured Abdul Rasheed Dar, the father of martyred police officer, that the government will take care of the family and provide free education to the children.

"The Dy CM directed the officials to dedicate a landmark public facility like PHC in the name of martyred SHO. Dr Singh also met with the children of deceased SHO," said an official spokesman.

He also directed the DGP to expedite the case of job for the next of kin of the deceased. "The nation will always remain indebted to Feroz Dar for the supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty," he said.

Fourteen cops and two SPOs have scarified their lives during terror attacks this year. Eight of them were killed since Thursday alone. To show solidarity and concern for the bereaved, J&K police will donate one day salary this month.
