BJP National President Amit Shah on Tuesday said the central government led by Narendra Modi has made several contributions to OBC (Other Backward Class) communities and oppressed sections, including farmers, in Gujarat.

Addressing a rally in Junagadh, of Page Pramukhs from Saurashtra region, Shah was clearly blowing the poll bugle in Saurashtra, the BJP’s stronghold. The shift in focus to the OBCs, who constitute 55 per cent of the total voters in Gujarat, comes at a time when the Patel community, the BJP’s trusted vote bank, has turned its face from the party. He also pointed out that the NDA’s presidential nominee Ram Nath Kovind is from the Koli community, which has OBC status in state.

Addressing a gathering of around one lakh workers, Shah said, “PM Narendra Modi has given a lot to Gujarat. He has formed an OBC commission at the national level to ensure all the OBC communities get their rights. The centre and state governments have always worked for oppressed sections such as farmers, women, OBCs, SCs, STs, the poor, and labourers. With their support, the BJP will surely win over 150 seats and more in the Assembly polls.”

Citing the Congress’s lack of a strong leadership, Shah said, “Unlike Congress, the BJP has a great leader like Modi and he is from Gujarat. The Congress has lost people’s faith and mandate in Gujarat,” Shah added.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, Gujarat BJP President Jitu Vaghani and all the top leaders of the party were present at the rally.

Shah will hold another rally on Wednesday in Nadiad, covering eight districts of central Gujarat and Vadodara city.
